Garter And Rib Hat

Lion Brand® Vanna's Tapestry

16 sts + 30 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row).
20 sts + 20 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Twisted Rib worked in rnds.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

skp Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch – 1 st decreased.
sk2p (slip-k2tog-pass slipped st over)
A double decrease worked as follows:
1. Insert right needle as if to knit, and slip the next st from the left needle to the right needle.
2. Knit the next 2 sts together.
3. With tip of left needle, lift the slipped st (the 2nd st on right needle) up and over the k2tog (first st on right needle) and off the needle – you have decreased 2 sts.

Twisted Rib worked in rnds (worked over an even number of sts)
Rnd 1:
*K1 through back loop, p1; rep from * around.
Rnd 2: *K1, p1; rep from * around.
Rep Rnds 1 and 2 for Twisted Rib worked in rnds.

1. Body of Hat is worked sideways, back and forth in rows in Garter st (k every row) on circular needle.
2. The cast on and bound off edges of the body of Hat are sewn together, then sts are picked up to make the crown (top of Hat).
3. Crown of Hat is worked in Twisted Rib.

With circular needle, cast on 28 sts. Working back and forth in rows as if working on straight needles, work in Garter st (k every row) until you have 68 Garter ridges (total of 136 rows worked).
Bind off, leaving a 30 in. (76 cm) yarn tail.
Using yarn tail, sew bound off edge to cast on edge.
Shape Crown (top of Hat)
From RS, with circular needle, pick up and knit 1 st in each of the 68 Garter ridges – 68 sts. Place marker for beginning of rnd.
Join by knitting the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist.
Work in Twisted Rib for 3 rnds.
Next Rnd (Dec Rnd): Change to double pointed needles as you work this rnd as follows: with needle 1, skp, continue Rnd 2 of Twisted Rib over next 13 sts, k2tog; with needle 2, p1, skp, work Rnd 2 of Twisted Rib over next 11 sts, k2tog, p1; with needle 3, work same as needle 1; with needle 4 work same as needle 2 – 60 sts, 15 sts on each needle.
Rnd 1: Work Rnd 1 of Twisted Rib.
Rnd 2 (Dec Rnd): On needle 1, skp, continue Rnd 2 of Twisted Rib to last 2 sts, k2tog; on needle 2, p1, skp, continue Rnd 2 of Twisted Rib to last 3 sts, k2tog, p1; on needle 3, work same as needle 1; on needle 4, work same as needle 2 – 52 sts, 14 sts on each needle.
Rnds 3, 5, 7 and 9: Rep Rnd 1.
Rnds 4, 6, 8 and 10: Rep Rnd 2 – 20 sts, 5 sts on each needle at the end of Rnd 10.
Rnd 11: Rep Rnd 1.
Rnd 12: (Sk2p, k2tog, p1, sk2p, p1) twice – 10 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Draw yarn tail through remaining sts, and pull to gather. Knot to secure.

Weave in ends.
