11 sts + 16 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) over Chart pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds (over a multiple of 2 sts)
Rnd 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds.

1. Cowl is worked in rnds on circular needle.
2. Cowl is worked in stranded colorwork using 2 colors per row. Carry color not in use loosely and evenly across WS of work.

With B, cast on 102 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
With A, beg with Rnd 1, work in K1, p1 Rib for 1 rnd.
Change to B and work in K1, p1 Rib for 1 rnd.

Bind off.

Fold cast-on edge in half and sew 8 in. (20.5 cm) closed for Hood.
Weave in ends.

Wrap B around 8 in. (20.5 cm) cardboard 66 times. Cut a piece of A, 20 in. (51 cm) long and thread doubled into large-eyed blunt needle. Insert needle under all strands at upper edge of cardboard. Pull tightly and knot securely near strands. Holding strands of A together and using crochet hook, make a chain with rem ends of yarn until all yarn is finished. Fasten off. Secure end to tip of sewn Hood.

Cut yarn loops at lower edge of cardboard. Cut a piece of yarn 8 in. (20.5 cm) long and wrap tightly around loops 1 1/2 in. (4 cm) below top knot to form Tassel neck. Knot securely; thread ends onto needle and weave ends to center of Tassel. Trim Tassel ends evenly.

Tasseled Hooded Cowl Reviewed by LA Tooley on 2015-12-17 *
I am in the process of making this. First time using a pattern/yarn change within a row but this yarn is forgiving so hope that should I make a mistake, it won't be too difficult to hide! I'm rating it 3 stars until I finish - at which time I'll update...

On another note, if you are doing this, be aware that there is NO wrong side on knitting in the round and, although the chart gives directions for right side/wrong side, ONLY work the right side instructions. 1-4, 9-9-20 & 26-29 are KNIT only and 5-8 & 21-25 are PURL only.

Additionally, I wish all patterns would provide instructions for the best cast-on method for that particular project. I ended up going with a tail cast that casts on both knit and purl. Unfortunately, it was the first time I'd done it and I didn't realize that essentially the 2nd stitch in the cast-on is the 1st stitch of the round so my Purl cast=on fed a Knit rib. Oh well. Again, this yarn is forgiving so I don't think it will show poorly.
