12 sts + 16 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased.
K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds (worked over a multiple of 2 sts)
Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 rib worked in rnds.
1. Mittens are worked in the rnd on double pointed needles.
2. Sts are increased to make the thumb gusset, then placed on a holder until hand of mitten has been completed.
MITTENS (make 2)
Cast on 21 sts. Divide onto 4 needles, with 5 sts on each of 3 needles and 6 sts on the 4th needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts. Work in K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds until piece measures about 3 in. (7.5 cm) from beg.
Rnd 1: K10, place marker (pm), k1, pm, k to end of rnd.
Rnd 2: K10, slip marker (sm), M1, k1, M1, sm, k to end of rnd – 23 sts.
Rnd 3: Knit, slipping markers as you come to them.
Rnd 4: K to marker, sm, M1, k to marker, M1, sm, k to end of rnd – 25 sts.
Rep Rnds 3 and 4 until there are 9 sts between markers – 29 sts when all increases have been completed.
Rnd 1: K10, remove marker and slip 9 sts for thumb gusset to st holder, k to end of rnd – 20 sts rem for hand.
Work in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) until piece measures about 1 1/2 in. (4 cm) less than desired finished length.
Rnd 1 (Dec): *K2, k2tog; rep from * around – 15 sts.
Rnds 2 and 4: Knit.
Rnd 3 (Dec): *K1, k2tog; rep from * around – 10 sts.
Rnd 5 (Dec): *K2tog; rep from * around – 5 sts.
Rnd 6: Knit.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.
Return thumb gusset sts from holder to double pointed needles, with 3 sts on each of 3 needles.
Place marker for beg of rnd.
Join yarn leaving a long yarn tail.
Work in St st worked in rnds until thumb measures 1/2 in. (1 cm) less than desired length.
Rnd 1 (Dec): *K1, k2tog; rep from * around – 6 sts.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnd 3 (Dec): *K2tog; rep from * around – 3 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail.
Thread yarn tail through rem sts and pull to gather.
