10 dc + 5 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Sunday Brunch Poncho Reviewed by sharstring on 2015-02-16 ****
I started crocheting again after a 15+ year hiatus & this was the 1st project I took on - it's a wonder I kept going, hahaha! I love this yarn & poncho but yes, it's challenging to see/count stitches in Homespun...thank goodness my prior crochet knowledge kicked in to help me w/ this yarn (note, beginners might want to try a different yarn before Homespun). Not only that but there are ERRORS in the directions for rows 2 & 3 - when it says "sk 1 dc", it should say "sk 1 3-dc group" or "sk 1 3-dc group/2nd half of shell". I did this wrong (actually skipping just 1 dc, not the 3-dc grouping) for several rows before I saw the pattern emerge & by looking at the pictures, realized the pattern was at fault, not me! That being said, the final product is very cool - a pretty & warm poncho.
