14 sts + 20 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in K1, p2 Rib.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

ssk (slip, slip, knit)  Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.

K1, p2 Rib worked in rnds (worked over a multiple of 3 sts)
Rnd 1:
* K1, p2, rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p2 rib worked in rnds.

1. Hat is worked in one piece in the round, beginning on a circular needle, then changing to double pointed needles when sts have been sufficiently decreased.
2. When knitting in the round on double pointed needles (dpns), your sts should be divided fairly evenly onto the needles. When working with a set of 5 dpn, your sts should be divided among 4 needles. The total number of sts will not always be evenly divisible by the number of dpns that you are using – this is not a problem! Simply divide your sts as evenly as possible, you will still create a symmetrical ‘tube’ of knitting.

With circular needle, cast on 69 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Work in K1, p2 rib until piece measures about 11 1/2 in. (29 cm) from beg.
Shape Crown (top of Hat)
Next Dec Rnd:
*K1, p2tog; rep from * around – 46 sts at the end of this rnd.
Next Rnd: Working with one needle at a time, change to double pointed needles as you work this rnd, *k1, p1; rep from * around.
Next Dec Rnd: P2tog, *ssk, p2tog; rep from * around – 23 sts.
Next Rnd: K2tog, *p1, k1; rep from * around – 22 sts.
Next Dec Rnd: K2tog around – 11 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail through remaining sts, and pull to gather. Knot securely.

Weave in ends.

Ribbed Slouchy Hat Reviewed by heidi on 2014-12-26 *****
Love this pattern. It's a quick and easy hat to make. I made one for my niece out of Wool Ease yarn and she loves it. I did drop the needle size down to a size 9 since the yarn is a bulky yarn. I have requests for 3 more hats. My next one I'm using the Hometown yarn. The hat is super soft. I also added a big pom pom at the end of the hats. Super cute.
