13 sts + 16 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm) over pattern with larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.
sk2p (slip-k2tog-pass slipped st over)
A double decrease worked as follows:
1. Insert right needle as if to knit, and slip the next st from the left needle to the right needle.
2. Knit the next 2 sts together.
3. With tip of left needle, lift the slipped st (the 2nd st on right needle) up and over the k2tog (first st on right needle) and off the needle - you have decreased 2 sts.

K1, p1 Rib in rnds (over even number of sts)
Rnd 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds.

1. Hat is worked in one piece in the rnd, first on circular needle, then changing to double pointed needles.
2. When knitting in the rnd on double pointed needles (dpns), your sts need to be divided fairly evenly onto the needles. If you are working with a set of 4 dpn, your sts should be divided among 3 needles. If you are working with a set of 5 dpn, your sts should be divided among 4 needles. The total number of sts will not always be evenly divisible by the number of dpns that you are using – this is not a problem! Simply divide your sts as evenly as possible, you will still create a symmetrical ‘tube’ of knitting.

With circular needle, cast on 54 sts. Place marker for beginning of rnd and join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle, being careful not to twist.
Work in K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds for 7 rnds.
Next Rnd (Increase): *K8, kfb in next st; rep from * around - 60 sts at the end of this rnd.
Next Rnd: Purl, changing to double pointed needles as you work (placing 15 sts on each of 4 double pointed needles).

Rnds 1 and 2: *K2, p1; rep from * around.
Rnds 3 and 4: P6, * k2, p1, k2, p7; rep from * to last 6 sts, k2, p1, k2, p1.
Rnds 5 and 6: Rep Rnds 1 and 2.
Rnds 7 and 8: * K2, p1, k2, p7; rep from * around.

Shape Crown (top of Hat)
Next (Decrease) Rnd: *
K1, ssk, k the knit sts and p the purl sts to last 4 sts on first double pointed needle, k2tog, k1, p1; rep from * across each needle - 52 sts.
Next Rnd: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep the last 2 rnds twice more - 36 sts remain. Rep Decrease Rnd twice more - 20 sts remain, 5 sts on each of 4 needles.
Next (Decrease) Rnd: *K1, sk2p, p1; rep from * around - 3 sts remain on each of 4 needles.
Last Rnd: Sk2p around.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through remaining 4 sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

Weave in ends.
