Chic Flattering Dress

Lion Brand« Vanna's Glamour«

GAUGE:

25 1/2 sts + 33 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS)

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.

PATTERN STITCH
K1, p1 Rib (worked over an even number of sts)
Row 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end of row.

2. Upper and Lower Backs are seamed to make the Back.
3. The side edges of the Left and Right Fronts are seamed to Center Front to make the Front.

FINISHING
Sew the upper edge of the Lower Back to the lower edge of the Upper Back, forming a pleat on the Lower Back as follows:
Mark centers of lower edge of Upper Back and top edge of Lower Back. Pin pieces together at marked center.
Beginning at each side and working towards marked center, pin top edge of Lower Back to lower edge of Upper Back.
Stop pinning about 5 in. (12.5 cm) from each side of marked center.
Note that the edge of the Lower Back is longer than the Upper Back. Fold the extra width of the Lower Back on each side towards the marked center to make a pleat.
Finish pinning the edges together. Sew Upper and Lower Backs together, securing folds of the pleat and removing pins as you sew.
Sew Right and Left Fronts to Center Front. Sew shoulders.
Seam ends of the 2 neck trim extensions. Pin the trim at this seam to center of the back neck of Dress.
Easing to fit, sew the trim around the neck edge of Front and Back.
Pockets
Following diagram, fold and sew Pockets.
Place markers 10 1/2 in. (26.5 cm) from lower edge on each side of Front and Back.
Seam sides from markers to lower edge.
Place markers 5 3/4 in. above previous markers on each side. Sew open edges of one Pocket to each side of Dress, between markers.
