Winter's Tale Poncho

Lion Brand® Heartland® - Pelt

14 sts + 20 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) with larger needle and A over Wave pattern worked in rnds.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Yo (yarn over)
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

Wave Pattern (worked in rnds over a multiple of 18 sts)
Rnds 1 and 2:
Rnd 3: *(K2tog) 3 times, (yo, k1) 6 times, (k2tog) 3 times; rep from * around.
Rnd 4: Purl.
Rep Rnds 1-4 for Wave pattern.

1. Poncho is worked in one piece in the rnd.
2. When you see ‘– 12 sts’ in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific rnd.

With longer circular needle and A, cast on 162 sts. Place marker for beginning of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Purl one rnd.
Rnds 1-20: With A, work Rnds 1-4 of Wave pattern.
Rnd 21: With B, knit.
Rnds 22-24: With B, purl.
Rnds 25-28: With A, work Rnds 1-4 of Wave pattern.
Rnds 29-52: Rep Rnds 21-28.
Rnd 53: With B, knit.
Rnds 54-56: With B, purl.
Dec Rnd: With B, *(p7, p2tog); rep from * around – 144 sts remain at the end of this rnd.
With B, purl one rnd.
Dec Rnd: With B, *(p6, p2tog); rep from * around – 126 sts.
Change to shorter size 10.5 (6.5 mm) circular needle.
With A, purl one rnd.
Dec Rnd: With B, *(p5, p2tog); rep from * around – 108 sts.
With B, purl one rnd.
Dec Rnd: With B, *(p4, p2tog); rep from * around – 90 sts.
With B, purl 6 rnds.
Change to smaller circular needle.
Next Rnd: With A, knit.
Next Rnd: With A, *k3, p3; rep from * around.

Winter's Tale Poncho Reviewed by Alison Richman on 2015-01-28 ****
Once your brain adjusts to working with the faux fur, the rest is easy, and the result is fabulous. I used a size 10.5 29" needle and omitted the 36" size altogether. Same with the size 9. I find 16" needles too constraining and not necessary for this pattern. I wish LB would give a tutorial for carrying up yarn when working with 2 colors in the round. Would be so much easier than tying knots at every intersection. Thank you LB!
