9 stitches + 12 rounds = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch worked in rounds (knit every round).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Hat is worked in one piece in the round on double pointed needles.

Cast on 45 stitches. Divide stitches onto 4 needles, with 11 stitches on each of 3 needles and 12 stitches on the 4th needle. Place marker for beginning of round. Join by working the first stitch on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist stitches.
Work in Stockinette stitch worked in rounds (knit every round) until piece measures about 7 in. (18 cm) from beginning.
Shape Crown (Top of Hat)
Decrease Round:
*Knit 3, knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * around – 36 stitches at the end of this round.
Next Round: Knit.

Decrease Round: *Knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * around – 9 stitches.

This was my first time knitting with double pointed needles and it was actually quite easy and fun! My hat turned out just like the picture and is very thick and warm. I plan on making several more as gifts!.
