GAUGE:

17 sts + 24 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Beaded Rib pattern using larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

PATTERN STITCHES
K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds (over an even number of sts)
Rnd 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds.

Beaded Rib Pattern worked in rnds (over an even number of sts)
Rnd 1:
Purl.
Rnd 2: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnds 1 and 2 for Beaded Rib pattern worked in rnds.

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked in rnds beg at lower edge.
2. When knitting in the rnd on double pointed needles (dpns), your sts need to be divided fairly evenly onto the needles. If you are working with a set of 4 dpns, your sts should be divided among 3 needles. If you are working with a set of 5 dpns, your sts should be divided among 4 needles. The total number of sts will not always be evenly divisible by the number of dpns that you are using – this is not a problem! Simply divide your sts as evenly as possible, you will still create a symmetrical ‘tube’ of knitting.

HAT
With smaller double pointed needles (dpns) and C, cast on 80 sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles, with 20 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Ribbing
Work in K1, p1 Rib for 24 rnds.
Cut C.
Body
Change to larger dpns as you work the next rnd.
Rnds 1-6: With B, work in Beaded Rib pattern for 6 rnds.
Rnds 7-12: With A, work in Beaded Rib pattern for 6 rnds.
Rnds 13-18: Rep Rnds 1-6.
Shape Crown (top of Hat)
Note:
Continue to change color every 6 rnds throughout shaping.
Rnd 1: *P14, p2tog, place marker; rep from * to last 16 sts, p14, p2tog – 75 sts rem at the end of the rnd.
Rnd 2: *(K1, p1) to 1 st before marker, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 3: *P to 2 sts before marker, p2tog; rep from * to end of rnd – 70 sts.
Rnd 4: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 5: *P to 2 sts before marker, p2tog; rep from * to end of rnd – 65 sts.
Rnds 6-25: Rep Rnds 2-5 – 15 sts at the end of Rnd 25.
Rnd 26: *K1, p1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail through remaining sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.
