15 sts + 22 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) over K2, p2 Rib.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.
Yo (yarn over) an increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
sk2pSlip 1 as if to knit, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over - 2 sts decreased.

K2, p2 Rib (multiple of 4 sts + 2)
Row 1 (RS):
K2, *p2, k2; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K2, p2 Rib.

Hat is worked flat and then seamed.

With A, cast on 66 sts.
Work in K2, p2 Rib until piece measures about 1 1/2 in. (4 cm) from beg, end with a RS row. Note: End with a RS row means that the last row you work should be a RS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a WS row.
Row 1 (WS): With B, p32, p2tog, p32 - 65 sts at the end of this row.
Row 2: K2, *k1, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.
Row 3 and all WS rows: P to end of row.
Row 4: K4, *yo, k3; rep from * to last st, k1 - 85 sts.
Row 6: K2, k2tog, *yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, sk2p; rep from * to last 9 sts, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, ssk, k2 - 65 sts.

Row 10: Rep Row 4.
Row 12: K2, *k1, k2tog, yo, sk2p, yo, ssk; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3 - 65 sts.

Row 49: P33, M1, p32 - 66 sts.

Row 3: *K2tog; rep from * to last st, k1 - 9 sts.
Row 4: *P2tog; rep from * to last st, p1 - 5 sts.

Lacework Hat Reviewed by patricia siegel on 2015-02-07 ***
There is a mistake as the others have noted. Mine does not look as lacy as the picture, but I haven't completely finished. Pattern is easy but must be followed to the letter except for the error. More like purl row 13 and start from row 2 to do next
