Image of Chunky Cabled Hat

This knit cable hat is worked in the round for nice seamless construction. Top it off with a color contrasting Pom for a great finishing touch.

GAUGE:

14 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) over Rnds 1-12 with larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

3/3 RC (3 over 3 right cross) Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k3, then k3 from cable needle.
skp Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch – 1 st decreased.

PATTERN STITCH
K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds (multiple of 2 sts)
Rnd 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds.

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked in the round on double pointed needles.
2. When you see ‘– 12 sts’ in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

HAT
With smaller needles, cast on 64 sts. Divide sts onto 4 double pointed needles, with 16 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Beg with Rnd 1, work in K1, p1 rib until piece measures about 3 in. (7.5 cm) from beg.
Change to larger needles.
Rnds 1 and 3: Knit.
Rnd 2 and all even numbered rnds: *P1, k6, p1; rep from * around.
Rnd 5: *K1, 3/3 RC, k1; rep from * around.
Rnds 7, 9 and 11: Knit.
Rnd 12: *P1, k6, p1; rep from * around.
Rep Rnds 1-12 once more.
Shape Crown (top of Hat)
Dec Rnd 1:
*K2tog, k4, skp; rep from * around – 48 sts.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Dec Rnd 2: *K2, skp, k2; rep from * around – 40 sts.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Dec Rnd 3: Skp around – 20 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

Shouldn't row 12 repeat row 5? The cable didn't look right, so I repeated row 5 the second time on row 2.
