GAUGE:

14 sts + 18 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm) over Rnds 1-18 with larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

5/5 LC (3 over 3 left cross) Slip 5 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k5, then k5 from cable needle.
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased.
skp Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch – 1 st decreased.

PATTERN STITCH
K2, p2 Rib worked in rnds (multiple of 4 sts)
Rnd 1:
*K2, p2; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1 for K2, p2 Rib worked in rnds.

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked in the round on double pointed needles, with cables and changing color to create stripes.
2. Do not cut A, between color changes. Instead, carry it up the WS of the work.
3. When you see '– 12 sts' in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

HAT
With smaller needles and A, cast on 52 sts. Divide sts onto 4 double pointed needles, with 13 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Beg with Rnd 1, work in K2, p2 Rib until piece measures about 3 in. (7.5 cm) from beg.
Change to larger needles.
Rnd 1 (Increase): With B, k1, (M1, k3) 17 times, M1 – 70 sts. Cut B.
Rnds 2-6: With A, *p2, k10, p2; rep from * around.
Rnd 7: With B, *p2, k10, p2; rep from * around. Cut B.
Rnds 8-12: With A, *p2, k10, p2; rep from * around.
Rnd 13: With B, *p2, 5/5 LC, p2; rep from * around. Cut B.
Rnds 14-18: With A, *p2, k10, p2; rep from * around.
Shape Crown (Top of Hat)
Rnd 19:
With B, *p2tog, k3, (k2tog) twice, k3, p2; rep from * around – 55 sts. Cut B.
Rnds 20-22: With A, *p1, k8, p2; rep from * around.
Rnd 23: *P1, k2, k2tog twice, k2, p2tog; rep from * around – 40 sts.
Rnd 24: *P1, k1, skp, k2, skp; rep from * around – 30 sts.
Rnd 25: *P1, k5; rep from * around. Cut A.
Rnd 26: With B, *k2tog, k2, k2tog; rep from * around – 20 sts.
Rnd 27: K2tog around – 10 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

FINISHING
With B and following package directions, make a large pom-pom. Tie pom-pom to top of Hat.
Weave in ends.
