Ski Cap

Lion Brand® Tweed Stripes®

10 dc + 8 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

rev sc (reverse single crochet) Single crochet worked from left to right (right to left, if left-handed). Insert hook into next stitch to the right (left), under loop on hook, and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.

1. Cap is worked in joined rnds beg at lower edge, with RS always facing. Do not turn at beg of rnds.
2. Earflaps are worked back and forth in rows onto lower edge of Cap.
3. When you see '- 12 sts' in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

Ch 48, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, join with sl st in beg sc - 48 sc.
Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in each sc around, sl st in top of beg ch-3.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, working in sps between sts, dc in sp between each dc around, sl st in top of beg ch-3.
Rep Rnd 3 until piece measures about 5 in. (12.5 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd: Working in back loops only, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc.
Next Rnd: Sc in each st around.
Shape Crown (Top of Cap)
Dec Rnd 1:
*Sc in next 7 sts, sk next st; rep from * around - 42 sc.
Next Rnd: Sc in each sc around.
Dec Rnd 2: *Sc in next 6 sts, sk next st; rep from * around - 36 sc.
Next Rnd: Sc in each sc around.
Dec Rnd 3: *Sc in next 5 sts, sk next st; rep from * around - 30 sc.
Next Rnd: Sc in each sc around.
Dec Rnd 4: *Sc in next 4 sts, sk next st; rep from * around - 24 sc.
Next Rnd: Sc in each sc around.
Dec Rnd 5: *Sc in next 3 sts, sk next st; rep from * around - 18 sc.
Next Rnd: Sc in each sc around.
Dec Rnd 6: *Sc in next 2 sts, sk next st; rep from * around - 12 sc.
Dec Rnd 7: *Sc in next st, sk next st; rep from * around, sc in last sc, join with sl st in beg sc - 6 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

With RS facing, beg at join of Rnd 1 and working along opposite edge of foundation ch, skip first 16 sts, join yarn with sl st in next st, sc in each ch around, sl st to first sc to join - 48 sc.
Row 1: Ch 3 (beg ch 3 counts as a dc on this row and on all following rows), turn, dc in next 31 sts, leave rem sts unworked.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each dc across - 32 sts.
Rows 3-5: Rep Row 2.
Shape Earflaps
First Earflap
Row 6:
Ch 1, turn, sc in next 14 sts, leave rem sts unworked.
Row 7: Turn, sl st in next 2 sts, sc in next 12 sts.
Row 8: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 10 sts.
Fasten off.
Second Earflap
Row 6:
Join yarn with sl st in Row5, 5 sts from side of First Earflap, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 13 sts - 14 sts.
Row 7: Turn, sc in next 12 sts, leave rem sts unworked.
Row 8: Ch 1, turn, sl st in next 2 sts, sc in next 10 sts.
Fasten off.

From RS, join yarn in any st along edge of Cap and work reverse sc evenly spaced around lower edge of Cap and Earflaps.

Twisted Cord
Cut an 80 in. (203 cm) length of yarn. Fold length in half and knot ends. Slip one end over a doorknob and slip a pencil through the other end. Turn the pencil to twist the strands clockwise until they are tightly twisted. Keeping the strands taut, fold the piece in half, remove the pencil and allow the cord to twist on itself. Knot end of twisted cord.
Draw folded end of cord through corner sts of one earflap. Pull ends of cord through fold and tighten. Rep on opposite earflap.
Cut the elastic loop of The Pom and use ends to tie The Pom to top of Cap.
Weave in ends.

Way too small and very visible seam Reviewed by Jessie on 2015-01-16 **
I'm thinking this pattern must have originally been intended for a child, because I had to ch 60 to fit around my head. The ch 3 at each new row created huge gaps along the seam. I am currently making it again (ch 60) and using an invisible seam technique (ch 2 and sk first st, leaving it for the end of the R) which I hope will solve this issue.
