Braided Cable Hat

Lion Brand® Unique

15 sts + 20 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm) over Rnds 1-4 of Hat.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

4/4 LC (4 over 4 left cross) Slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k4, then k4 from cable needle.
4/4 RC (4 over 4 right cross)Slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k4, then k4 from cable needle.

Braided Cable (worked over 20 sts)
Row 1 (RS):
P4, k12, p4.
Row 2 and all WS rows: K4, p12, k4.
Row 3: P4, k4, 4/4 LC, p4.
Row 5: P4, k12, p4.
Row 7: P4, 4/4 RC, k4, p4.
Row 8: K4, p12, k4.
Rep Rows 1-8 for Braided Cable.

1. Cable edge of Hat is worked back and forth in rows in a strip. Ends are seamed, then sts are picked up along one long edge and Hat is worked in the round on double pointed needles.
2. When you see '- 12 sts' in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

Cable Strip
Work Cable back and forth in rows on 2 double pointed needles.
Cast on 20 sts.
Beg with Row 1, work in Braided Cable until piece measures about 19 in. (48 cm) from beg, end with Row 2 or 6.
Bind off.
Seam short ends together to form a ring.
Body of Hat
From RS, beg at seam, pick up and k 52 sts evenly spaced around one long edge. Divide sts as evenly onto 4 double pointed needles, with 13 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle.
Rnd 1: (K2, p2) around.
Rnd 2: (K1, p2, k1) around.
Rnd 3: (P2, k2) around.
Rnd 4: (P1, k2, p1) around.
Rep Rnds 1-4 until piece measures about 8 in. (20.5 cm) from beg.

Beautiful yarn and I love the cable band but something is odd about the shape of the hat. I have a big noggin (the better to think with!) but while the band fit great the hat itself was tight. I'm giving this to a smaller-headed family member and adding more stitches to the body of the hat on my next try.
