Ridged Hooded Cardigan

Lion Brand® Tweed Stripes®

GAUGE:

14 sts + 22 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Ridge pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased.
skp Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch – 1 st decreased.

PATTERN STITCH
Ridge St Pattern
Rows 1-4:
Beg with a k row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
Rows 5-7: Knit.
Row 8: Purl.
Rows 9-11: Knit.
Row 12: Purl.
Row 13-15: Knit.
Row 16: Purl.
Rows 17-22: Work in St st.
Rep Rows 1-22 for Ridge St pattern.
Note: Each piece of Cardigan will begin the Ridge St pattern on a different row but will rep Rows 1-22 once the first partial rep has been worked. Ridges are not designed to line up between pieces.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES
Grafting

Holding the 2 needles parallel with WS of fabric together, thread a large-eyed blunt needle with one of the yarn ends and work as follows: 1. Insert needle as if to purl into first st on front piece. Insert needle as if to knit into first st on back piece. Pull yarn through, leaving sts on needles.
2. Insert needle as if to knit through first st on front needle and let the st drop from needle.
3. Insert needle into 2nd st on front needle as if to purl and pull the yarn through, leaving st on the needle.
4. Insert needle into first st on back needle as if to purl and let it drop from the needle.
5. Insert needle as if to knit through 2nd st on back needle and pull the yarn through, leaving st on needle.
Rep steps 2-5 until all sts are gone.> When finished, adjust tension as necessary. Weave in ends.

w&t (wrap and turn):
A technique used to ensure that a small hole doesn't form at the end of a short row.
1. Slip next st as if to purl.
2. Bring yarn between needles to front. Take care not to wrap the yarn over a needle, this would create a new st.
3. Slip same st back to left needle.
4. Turn work and bring yarn in position for next st.
This will place a wrap around the st.
5. The next time you knit this st on a RS row, pick up the wrap and knit it tog with the st.

NOTES:

1. Cardigan is worked in 5 pieces – Back, 2 Fronts and 2 Sleeves.
2. Cardigan takes a freeform approach to color and st patterns to modernize a classic shape.
3. Pieces are joined at yoke (upper section of Cardigan)then worked in one piece, back and forth in rows, to work neck and hood shaping.
4. Neck is shaped with short rows.
5. All pieces are worked in the Ridge st pattern.
6. Front bands are worked in one piece with the Fronts.
7. You will be working a st pattern, a color sequence and shaping all AT THE SAME TIME. Read through the instructions carefully before beginning this project to be sure you are comfortable with doing several things at the same time.
8. When you see 'work even' in the instructions, this means to continue on in the pattern st you have established without changing the st count by increasing, decreasing, or binding off.
9. End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
10. When you see "– 12 sts". in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.
