11 sts + 10 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Cable pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

2/2 LC (2 over 2 left cross) Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front of work, k2, then k2 from cable needle.
1/1 LC (1 over 1 left cross) Slip 1 sts to cable needle and hold in front of work, k1, then k1 from cable needle.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

Cast on 54 sts, dividing sts as evenly as possible onto 3 or 4 double pointed needles. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.

Cabled Hat Reviewed by Mary Lesh on 2014-12-27 *****
I finally gave cables a try and I just loved it!! Very easy pattern. Instructions are easy to follow. Yarn is wonderful and does not split easily when K2tog. It's very pretty. I have double points but I don't like using them so I used a circular knitting needle and Magic loop technique. I'm off to make the companion Scarf L32326

Model is my daughter. But this one is MINE! lol
