8 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) with larger hook.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

FPDC (front post double crochet) Yarn over, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around post of indicated st, draw up a loop, (yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip st behind the FPDC.

Hat is worked in joined rnds beg at top of Hat, with RS always facing.

With larger hook, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as first dc in this rnd and in all following rnds), work 15 dc in ring; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 16 dc.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in each dc around; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 32 dc.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 48 dc.
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next 4 dc, FPDC around next dc, *dc in next 5 dc, FPDC around next dc; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnds 5-7: Ch 3, dc in next 4 dc, FPDC around next FPDC, *dc in next 5 dc, FPDC around next FPDC; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Change to smaller hook.
Rnd 8: Rep Rnd 5.
Fasten off.

With larger hook, ch 5; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in ring, (ch 7, sc in ring) 6 times, ch 7; join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. With yarn tail, sew Flower to Hat. Sew bead or button to center of Flower.

Quick Cloche Hat Reviewed by Denise Bowman-Wermer on 2014-10-09 ****
Cute hat, but I had to use smaller hooks - size K and size J (both "S. Bates" style hooks, which tend to be a bit larger). I also added another round at the bottom. I used 78 yards of Wool Ease Thick and Quick - same weight as Hometown USA.
