Animal Talk Scarf

Lion Brand« Heartland

GAUGE:

18 sts + 30 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st - 1 st increased.
Surface Chain Stitch
With yarn threaded into blunt needle, bring needle from WS to RS through piece. *Hold short length of yarn on front forming a small loop. Insert needle back into the same spot where it emerged, do not pull tight. Bring needle back through work a short distance away from previous insertion point and through small loop; rep from * for desired length.

NOTES:

1. Scarf is worked in Garter st (k every row), changing colors to create a pig at one end and a duck at the other.
2. Checkerboard Chart is worked in stranded colorwork, carry color not in use across WS of work. When following Chart, read RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right.
3. End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
4. When you see "- 12 sts" in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

SCARF
Pig

With F, cast on 10 sts.
Knit 2 rows.
Inc Row (RS): K1, kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1 - 12 sts.

FINISHING
Pig ears and nose are small objects that can present a choking hazard.
These embellishments can be omitted if you prefer. If you do add them, sew ears and nose to completed Scarf very securely, knotting yarn ends very carefully and securely.
Embroidered French knot eyes can also present a choking hazard if not properly secured. If you do choose to add them, be sure to knot all yarn ends very securely.
