GAUGE:

9 sts + 12 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

PATTERN STITCHES
K1, p1 Rib worked in rows (worked over an even number of sts)
Row 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib worked in rows.

K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds (worked over an even number of sts)
Rnd 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds.

NOTES:

1. Sweater is worked back and forth in rows beg at lower edge of back. Sts are then cast-on for underbody and piece worked in rnds on double pointed needles to bottom of leg openings. Piece is divided to make leg openings and back and underbody worked separately back and forth in rows to top of leg openings. Pieces are joined again at top of leg openings and piece worked in rnds to neck.
2. When knitting in the round on double pointed needles (dpns), your sts need to be divided fairly evenly onto the needles. If you are working with a set of 5 dpn, your sts should be divided among 4 needles. The total number of sts will not always be evenly divisible by the number of dpns that you are using - this is not a problem! Simply divide your sts as evenly as possible, you will still create a symmetrical 'tube' of knitting.

SWEATER
Back

With straight needles and B, cast on 22 (26) sts.
Work in K1, p1 Rib for 6 rows.
Beg with a RS (knit) row, work in St st worked in rows (k on RS, p on WS) for 3 (7) rows.

Shape Underbody Note: Piece is now worked in the rnd.
Rnd 1: Cast on 12 (14) sts for underbody. Divide sts as evenly as possible onto 4 dpns and place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle, being careful not to twist sts - 34 (40) sts.
Rnds 2-7 (RS): Work in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) over the 22 (26) back sts, work in K1, p1 Rib over the 12 (14) underbody sts.
Knit 3 (6) rnds.

Divide for Leg Openings
Back

Next Rnd: K over the 22 (26) back sts, sl the 12 (14) underbody sts to a holder.
Change to working in rows on straight needles and work in St st over the 22 (26) back sts for 9 (13) rows.
Sl sts to a holder.

Join to Work in the Rnd
