GAUGE:

11 sts + 14 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Vest is worked in 3 pieces, Back and 2 Fronts. The lower edges of Fronts are worked by casting on sts to create a shaped edge.
2. When you see '- 12 sts' in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

BACK
Cast on 54 (58, 64, 70, 76, 80) sts.
Beg with a RS (knit) row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 12 rows, end with a WS row as your last row.
Dec Row (RS): K1, k2tog, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 - 52 (56, 62, 68, 74, 78) sts at the end of this row.
Work even in St st (without increasing or decreasing) for 11 rows.
Rep last 12 rows twice more - 48 (52, 58, 64, 70, 74) sts when all decreases have been completed.
Work even in St st until piece measures about 15 in. (38 cm) from beg, end with a WS row as your last row.
Shape Armholes
Bind off 4 (5, 6, 7, 8, 9) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 2 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows - 36 (38, 40, 42, 44, 44) sts when all bind offs have been completed.
Continue in St st, and rep Dec Row every other row 1 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4) times - 34 (34, 34, 36, 36, 36) sts when all decreases have been completed.
Work until Armhole measures about 7 (7 1/2, 8, 8 1/2, 9, 9 1/2) in. (18 (19, 20.5, 21.5, 23, 24) cm), end with a WS row as your last row.
Shape Neck and Shoulders
Next Row (RS):
K9 (9, 9, 10, 10, 10) sts, join a 2nd ball of yarn and bind off 16 sts, work to end of row - 9 (9, 9, 10, 10, 10) sts rem each side.
Next Row: Working both sides at same time with separate balls of yarn, work to last 2 sts on first side, p2tog, on second side, p2 tog, work to end of row.
Next Row: K to last 2 sts on first side, k2tog, on second side, k2tog, work to end of row - 7 (7, 7, 8, 8, 8) sts when all decreases have been completed.
