9 1/2 sts + 12 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm) in Fair Isle pattern with larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

1. Hat is worked in the rnd on double pointed needles.
2. Hat is worked in Fair Isle colorwork using 2 colors per rnd. Carry color not in use across the WS of work.
3. Fair Isle pattern can be worked from written instructions or by following the Chart. If following Chart, work in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) and read all rnds of chart from right to left.

With smaller needles and A, cast on 48 sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles (12 sts per needle). Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
With A, work in K1, p1 Rib for 2 rnds.
With B, work in K1, p1 Rib for 1 rnd.
Rep last 3 rnds 2 more times.
With A, work in K1, p1 Rib for 2 rnds.
Change to larger needles.
Work Rnds 1-16 of Fair Isle pattern, working 6-st rep 8 times in each rnd.
With A, knit 1 rnd.
Bind off.

Flatten Hat. With crochet hook and working through both thicknesses through back loops of sts only, join B with sl st in first st, sl st in each st across.
Weave in ends.
