8 sc = 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Hat is worked in the rnd beg at top, then in rows for the back flap.

Ch 5; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 8 sc in ring; do not join, work in continuous rnds (spiral). Place marker for beg of rnd. Move marker up as work progresses.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around - 16 sc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around - 24 sc.
Rnd 4: *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around - 32 sc.
Rnd 5: *Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around - 40 sc.
Rnd 6: Sc in each sc around.
Rep Rnd 6 until piece measures 9 in. (23 cm) from beg.
Remove marker.
Back Flap
Row 1 (RS):
Sc in next 20 sts; leave remaining sts unworked.
Rows 2 and 3: Ch 1, turn, sk first st, sc in each st to last 2 sts, sk next st, sc in last st - 16 sc at the end of Row 3.
Edging (WS): Ch 1, turn, sc evenly spaced around all edges of Hat and back flap; join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off.

Following package directions, make a large size pom-pom.
Twisted Cord
Cut a 56 in. (142 cm) length of yarn. Fold length in half and knot about 1 in. (2.5 cm) from each end. Slip one end over a doorknob and slip a pencil through the other end. Turn the pencil to twist the strands clockwise until they are tightly twisted. Keeping the strands taut, fold the piece in half, remove the pencil and allow the cord to twist on itself.
Tie pom-pom to one end of twisted cord. Tie or sew opposite end of twisted cord to top of Hat. Weave in ends.
