Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®

10 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in rib pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

1. Hat is worked flat and then seamed.
2. Knitted tail is worked on 2 double pointed needles.

Cast on 49 sts.
Row 1 (WS): *P2, k2; rep from * to last st, p1.
Row 2: K1, *p2, k2; rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows until piece measures 4 in. (10 cm) from beg, end with a RS row.
Note: End with a RS row means that the last row you work should be a RS row.
Decrease Row (WS): *P2, k2tog; rep from * to last st, p1 - 37 sts at the end of this row.
Next Row (RS): K1, *p1, k2; rep from * to end of row.
Next Row: *P2, k1; rep from * to last st, p1.
Rep last 2 rows until piece measures 8 in. (20.5 cm) from beg, end with a RS row.
Shape Crown (Top of Hat)
Row 1 (WS):
*P1, p2tog; rep from * to last st, p1 - 25 sts.
Rows 2-5: Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 4 rows.
Row 6: *K2, k2tog; rep from * to last st, k1 - 19 sts.
Rows 7-9: Work in St st for 3 rows.
Row 10: *K1, k2tog; rep from * to last st, k1 - 13 sts.
Row 11: Purl.
Row 12: *K2tog; rep from * to last st, k1 - 7 sts.
Row 13: Purl.
Row 14: Rep Row 12 - 4 sts.
Do not bind off. Do not cut yarn.
Slip remaining 4 sts onto one double-pointed needle. From RS and working with 2 double-pointed needles. *Slide sts to other end of needle and knit them, pulling yarn tightly across the back of the work, (do not turn work); rep from * until tail measures about 6 in. (15 cm) long.
Bind off.

Sew side edges together for back seam.
Following package directions, make 2 medium size pom-poms. Tie one pom-pom to end of tail and 2nd pom-pom to middle of tail. Weave in ends.

Great, fast hat with a perfect fit. Made long tassel instead of pompoms. Will make again with slightly longer "floppy" part.
