Striped Furry Poncho

Lion Brand® Hometown USA® - Fun Fur®

8 sts + 18 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st worked in the rnd (k one rnd, p one rnd) with A.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

pfb (purl into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Purl the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Purl the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.

1. Poncho is worked in rnds, beg at neck, in a stripe pattern.
2. When working stripes, carry color not in use along WS of work.
3. Change to longer circular needle when sts have been sufficiently increased.

With shorter circular needle and A, cast on 36 (44, 48) sts.> Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Work in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) for 2 rnds.
Change to B and Garter st worked in the rnd (k one rnd, p one rnd).
Note: On the next rnd a marker is placed for front of Poncho. You may wish to use a different color maker than for beg of rnd marker.
Rnd 1: K18 (22, 24), place marker, k to end.
Rnd 2 (Increase Rnd): K1, pfb, p to one st before next marker, pfb, slip marker, k1, pfb, p to one st before next marker, pfb - 40 (48, 52) sts at the end of this rnd.
Change to A.
Rnd 3: With A, knit.
Rnd 4: With A, rep Rnd 2 - 44 (52, 56) sts.
Rnds 5 and 6: Rep Rnds 3 and 4.
Change to B.
Rnd 7: With B, knit.
Rnd 8: With B, rep Rnd 2 - 52 (60, 64) sts.
Change to A.
Rnds 9-12: Rep Rnds 3-6 - 64 (72, 76) sts at the end of Rnd 12.
Rep Rnds 7-12 until there are 108 (128, 144) sts.
Change to B.
Cut A, leaving a long yarn tail.
Next Rnd: With B, knit.
Change to C.
Cut B, leaving a long yarn tail.
Next Rnd:
With C, rep Rnd 2 - 112 (132, 148) sts.
Next Rnd: With C, knit.
Rep last 2 rnds twice - 120 (140, 156) sts when all increases have been completed.
Bind off.

Weave in ends.

Striped Furry Poncho Reviewed by Mary Wray on 2015-02-26 ****
I used Washington Denim and white. I could only find the 29" circular needle, so the start was a challenge. However, it came out really nice. I found some of the directions after "Row 12" a bit confusing at first, but once I figured that out - no problem. Same pattern, larger sizes would be good. Kids grow. I'd like one for myself! Switching to the "Fun Fur" was also a challenge, but that final touch was worth it.
