GAUGE:

15 sc + 16 rows = 4 in. (10 cm)

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Cl (4 double crochet cluster) Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops rem on hook), (yarn over, insert hook in same st, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) 3 times (5 loops rem on hook) yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.

NOTES:

1. Bag is made from 5 pieces: Front, Back, Side Panel, and 2 Handles. The long edges of the Side Panel are slip stitched to 2 sides and lower edges of the Front and Back to form Bag. Handles are sewn to top edges of Bag.
2. Gently push clusters (Cl) to RS of fabric as you work.


FRONT
With A, ch 42.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 41 sc.
Rows 2-6: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Fasten off.
Row 7: From RS, join B with sc in first st, sc in next st, Cl in next st, ch 1 to close Cl, *sc in next 5 sts, Cl in next st, ch 1 to close Cl; rep from * to last 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts – 7 Cl and 34 sc at the end of this row.
Fasten off.
Row 8: From WS, join A with sc in first st, sc in each sc and Cl across, do not work into the ch-1 sps.
Rows 9-11: With A, ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Fasten off.
Row 12: With C, rep Row 7.
Fasten off.
Rows 13-16: With A, rep Rows 8-11. Fasten off.
Row 17: With D, rep Row 7. Fasten off.
Rows 18-21: With A, rep Rows 8-11.
Fasten off.
Row 22: With E, rep Row 7. Fasten off.
Rows 23-26: With A, rep Rows 8-11.
Fasten off.
Row 27: With F, rep Row 7. Fasten off.
Rows 28-31: With A, rep Rows 8-11. Fasten off.
Rows 32-56: Rep Rows 7-31.
Rows 57 and 58: With A, rep Row 2 twice.
Edging: With A, ch 1, turn, sc evenly spaced around entire outer edge of piece, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

BACK
Make same as Front.

SIDE PANEL
With A, ch 13.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 12 sc.
Rows 2-160: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
Fasten off.

HANDLES (make 2)
With B, ch 36.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 35 sc.
Fasten off.
Row 2: From WS, join C with sc in first st, sc in each st across.
Fasten off.
Row 3: From RS, join D with sc in first st, sc in next st, Cl in next st, ch 1 to close Cl, *sc in next 5 sts, Cl in next st, ch 1 to close Cl; rep from * to last 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts – 6 Cl and 29 sc at the end of this row. Fasten off.
Row 4: From WS, join E with sc in first st, sc in each sc and Cl across, do not work into the ch-1 sps. Fasten off.
Row 5: From RS, join F with sc in first st, sc in each st across. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Pin Side Panel to sides and lower edge of Front, having the top edges even. From WS, with A, sl st the edges together, working (sl st, ch 1, sl st) in each lower corner. Rep to join other long edge of Side Panel to Back. Sew both ends of one Handle to top edge of Front. Rep to sew other Handle to top edge of Back. Weave in ends.
