GAUGE:

14 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
RT (Right Twist) K2tog and leave on left needle, then with right needle, go between the 2 sts and k the first st again.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES
Cable Cast On
Make a slip knot on left needle. Knit 1 st through slip knot, but do not drop slip knot from left needle; transfer new st from right needle to left needle - 2 sts on left needle. *Insert right needle between first 2 sts on left needle; wrap yarn and pull through (as if knitting a st); transfer new st to left needle. Repeat from * for desired number of sts.

PATTERN STITCH
Lace Stitch (multiple of 10 sts)
Row 1 (RS):
K2, k2tog, yo, RT, yo, ssk, k2.
Row 2, 4 and 8: Purl.
Row 3: K1, k2tog, yo, k4, yo, ssk, k1.
Row 5: K2tog, yo, k1, k2tog, yo twice, ssk, k1, yo, ssk.
Row 6: P4, k1 in first yo, p1 in second yo, p4.
Row 7: K2, yo, ssk, k2, k2tog, yo, k2.
Row 9: K3, yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k3.
Row 10: Purl.
Repeat Rows 1-10 for Lace st.

NOTES:

1. Shawl is worked back and forth in rows. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth in rows on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
2. Shawl begins at center of long straight side and sts are increased to make a semi-circle.
3. When you see ‘– 12 sts’ in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

Seashell Shawl Reviewed by Denise Kalinowskii on 2014-02-10 ****
I crocheted this for a friend who lives in Florida. I found this to be an excellent pattern...yu can lengthen just by adding more repeats of the pattern. The shawl sits nicely on your shoulders. Definitely will be doing this one again! A great TV project as you can crochet and watch at the same time!
