GAUGE:

1 ripple = about 4 in. (10 cm) wide.
12 sts + 6 1/2 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in ripple pattern.
1 Star = about 3 in. (7.5 cm) wide.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

dc3tog (dc 3 sts together) (Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops) 3 times, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook – 2 sts decreased.

NOTES:

1. The ripple in this design is created by working dc3tog to form 'valleys' and 3 dc all in one st to form 'peaks'. In each row, take care to work dc3tog over the 3 sts in each 'valley' and 3 dc in the center dc of each 'peak.' You may wish to use stitch markers to mark each peak.
2. The ripple pattern may not be evident until you have work multiple rows.
3. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete the st.
4. The blue field for Stars is worked in intarsia. The Stars are made separately and then sewed to Afghan.
