9 1/2 hdc = about 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Hdc2tog (hdc 2 sts together) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

Uses more than one ball! Reviewed by Maria A-N on 2015-09-22 ***
Great yarn in beautiful colors. I like the fact that there is vertical ribbing and then the rest is done horizontally. There were two issues. First it was a little tricky to evenly space the 48 SC for the first horizontal row. More importantly, one ball of Unique yarn was just short by a few rows. To be safe, purchase 2 if you want to follow this pattern. Makes a great gift and works up quickly.
