9 1/2 hdc = about 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Hdc2tog (hdc 2 sts together) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.
Hat Band is worked back and forth in rows, then last row is joined to first row to form a ring. The first rnd of Hat Body is worked across one long side of band.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 7 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working in back loops only, sc in each st across.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures about 19 in. (48.5 cm) from beg.
Hold first and last row together, with sts matching.
Joining Row: Ch 1, turn, working through both thicknesses, slip st in each st across to join. Do not fasten off.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, working in the ends of rows across one long side of band, work 48 sc evenly spaced around; join with sl st in first st - 48 sts.
Rnds 2-9: Ch 2, (counts as first hdc in this rnd and in all following rnds), hdc in each st around; join with sl st to beg ch.
