9 1/2 hdc = about 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Hdc2tog (hdc 2 sts together) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.
Hat Band is worked back and forth in rows, then last row is joined to first row to form a ring. The first rnd of Hat Body is worked across one long side of band.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 7 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working in back loops only, sc in each st across.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures about 19 in. (48.5 cm) from beg.
Hold first and last row together, with sts matching.
Joining Row: Ch 1, turn, working through both thicknesses, slip st in each st across to join. Do not fasten off.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, working in the ends of rows across one long side of band, work 48 sc evenly spaced around; join with sl st in first st - 48 sts.
Rnds 2-9: Ch 2, (counts as first hdc in this rnd and in all following rnds), hdc in each st around; join with sl st to beg ch.
