12 sc + 12 rounds = 4 in. (10 cm) When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.
1. Brim is worked back and forth in rows. Stitches are picked up along one long edge and Topper is worked in the round from lower edge to top of crown. Work in continuous rnds, with RS facing throughout; do not join or turn.
2. Work through back loop only throughout.
3. When you see '- 12 sts' in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.
Row 1: Working through back loops only, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across - 8 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working through back loops only, sc in each sc across - 8 sts.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures 18 in. (45.5 cm) from beg.
Joining Row: Fold strip with WS together and sts from last row and first row aligned, ch 1, working through back loop of one end and front loop of opposite end, slip st in each st across to join short ends.
Do not Fasten Off.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, working in ends of rows across one long side of band, work 54 sc evenly spaced around.
Place marker for beg of rnd.
Rnds 2-16: Working in continuous rnds through back loops only, sc in each st around.
Dec Rnd 17: Ch 1, *sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around - 45 sts.
Rnds 18-20: Working in continuous rnds and working through back loops only, sc in each st around.
Dec Rnd 21: Ch 1, *sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around - 36 sts.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.
Thread yarn tail through sts of last rnd and pull to gather, then knot to secure.
Weave in ends.
