GAUGE:

12 sc + 12 rounds = 4 in. (10 cm)

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Brim is worked back and forth in rows. Stitches are picked up along one long edge and Topper is worked in the round from lower edge to top of crown. Work in continuous rnds, with RS facing throughout; do not join or turn.
2. Work through back loop only throughout.
3. When you see '- 12 sts' in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

Toasty Topper Reviewed by Pat Kissel on 2014-03-24 ****
I made this hat using a J hook throughout, but the brim was too large for the average head. So the next time, I used an I hook for the brim, and a J hook for the rest of it. It's very fast, easy, and makes a lovely hat!
