Patchy Afghan

Lion Brand® Heartland

GAUGE:

12 hdc + 8 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm);
Small Block measures about 5 x 5 in. (12.5 x 12.5 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Afghan is made from 41 Blocks: 28 Small Blocks, 5 Large Solid Blocks, and 8 Large Two-Color Blocks.
2. Blocks are sewed tog following Assembly Diagram, then a Border is crocheted around entire outside edge of Afghan.
3. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through loops to complete the st. Fasten off old color.

SMALL BLOCK (make 28 - 6 with A, 5 with B, 6 with C, 4 with D, and 7 with E)
Ch 17.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg ch does not count as a st) and in each ch across - 15 sts.
Rows 2-10: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), turn, hdc in each st across.
Fasten off.

LARGE SOLID COLOR BLOCK (make 5 - 1 each with A, B, C, D, and E)
Ch 32.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg ch does not count as a st) and in each ch across - 30 sts.
Rows 2-20: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), turn, hdc in each st across.
Fasten off.

LARGE TWO-COLOR BLOCK 1
With A, ch 32.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg ch does not count as a st) and in each ch across - 30 sts.
Rows 2-10: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), turn, hdc in each st across.
Change to D.
Rows 11-20: With D, ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across.
Fasten off.
Rep Rows 1-20 of Large Two-Color Block 1 to make one Large Block in each of the following color combinations, working Rows 1-10 with the first color and Rows 11-20 with the second color.
Block 2, B and A.
Block 3: C and A.
Block 4: C and E.
Block 5: D and B.
Block 6: D and C.
Block 7: E and A.

FINISHING
Following Assembly Diagram, sew Small Blocks tog to make 7 Large Blocks. (Note: Large Blocks should measure about 9 x 9 in. [23 x 23 cm]). Sew Large Blocks into 4 strips of 5 Blocks each. Sew strips tog to make Afghan.
Border
Note:
The hdc st pattern is reversible. Choose one side to be the RS, then work the border with the RS facing.
Rnd 1: Join A with a sl st anywhere in outside edge of Afghan, work sl st evenly spaced around entire outside edge; join with sl st in first sl st.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.
