11 sc = 4 in. (10 cm).
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
A large hook is used to create an open fabric that will easily stretch to fit a range of sizes.
SHRUG Ch 113. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 112 sc. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working in back loops only, sc in each st across. Repeat Row 2 until piece measures about 32 in. (81.5 cm) from beginning.
FINISHING Fold piece in half to measure 20 x 32 in (51 x 81.5 cm). Place markers on each of the 20 in. (51 cm) sides, 7 in. (18 cm) below fold for armholes. Seam sides from markers down to lower edge. Weave in ends.

Canyon Shrug - Versatile pattern Reviewed by Jennifer VanOsdol on 2013-11-29
If you find sc tedious (as I do), use any stitch you want, just watch the overall size and you can create lots of different looks by using a variety of hook size and yarn. It's really a very versatile pattern.
