GAUGE:

11 1/2 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd), with 2 strands of yarn held tog.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Everyday Cowl Reviewed by Rachel Smythe on 2013-08-01 ****
Just finished this project and it turned out beautifully. My only difficulty was that the amount of yarn specified did not produce a full cowl. My cowl came out shorter by a good inch and a half. I would have had to buy an additional skein to make it the length stated in the pattern. My gauge was spot on, so I'm not sure what happened.
