Knotted Cowl

Lion Brand® Imagine

GAUGE:

Exact gauge is not essential to this project.

NOTES:

You will need a large, flat pinnable surface on which to work – the top of your bed would be perfect! Just be sure to collect all the pins when you’re finished working.

COWL
Unwind all 6 balls of yarn. Lay all strands out with ends together and fold them in half.
Holding the folded center of all 6 strands in one hand and following Diagram #1, tie strands into an overhand knot at center, leaving a 4 in. (10 cm) loop. With safety pins, secure knotted end of strands to a pinnable flat surface.

Arrange the strands in pairs. Each strand shown on the diagram represents 2 strands of yarn - a pair. Knots are worked with each pair of strands held together as one.
Following Diagram #2, arrange the pairs, 1-6, onto the flat surface.

The Cowl is made with both left and right hand basic double knots. Follow Diagrams #3 and #4 for how to make a left hand basic knot, and Diagrams #5 and #6 for how to make a right hand basic knot.

Beginning on the left side with pair of strands 1, and following Diagram #7, loosely tie the first left hand double knot. Knot pair 1 over and under pair 2. Pull pair 1 to the left to gently tighten. Repeat to make a double knot. When knot is completed, move pair 1 over pair 2, moving pair 2 to the left.

For second knot, follow Diagram #8. Knot pair 1 over and under pair 3. Pull pair 1 to the left to gently tighten and repeat to make a double knot. When second knot is completed, move pair 1 over pair 3, moving pair 3 to the left next to pair 2.
The next 3 knots are right hand basic double knots. Beginning on the right side, and following Diagram #9, knot pair 6 over and under pair 5. Pull pair 6 to the right to gently tighten and repeat to make a double knot. When third knot is completed, move pair 6 over pair 5, moving pair 5 to the right. For fourth knot, knot pair 6 over and under pair 4. Pull pair 6 to the right to tighten and repeat to make a double knot. When fourth knot is completed, move pair 6 over pair 4, moving pair 4 to the right next to pair 5.

Diagram #10 shows the current position of all pairs. To complete the first row of knots, use a right hand basic knot to tie pair 6 over and under pair 1. Pull pair 6 to the right to gently tighten and repeat to make a double knot. When last knot is completed, move pair 6 over pair 1, moving pair 1 to the right next to pair 5.

Diagram #11 shows how the first row will look when you're finished.

Continue to repeat the same row until almost all yarn has been used. Knot ends.

FINISHING
To make the Cowl, slip the ending knot through the beginning loop.
