Friendship Scarf

Lion Brand® Imagine

GAUGE:

Exact gauge is not essential to this project.

NOTES:

1. You will need a large, flat pinnable surface on which to work – the top of your bed would be perfect! Just be sure to collect all the pins when you’re finished working.
2. This pattern is for a Scarf made with double knots. For a less dense scarf, use single knots. To work a single knot, simply complete just one half of each double knot - as shown in Diagrams #3 and #5.

SCARF
Unwind all 3 balls of yarn and lay them out with ends together and fold them in half.
Holding the folded center of all 3 strands in one hand and following Diagram #1, tie strands into an overhand knot at center, leaving a 3 in. (7.5 cm) loop. With safety pins, secure knotted end of strands to a pinnable flat surface.

Following Diagram #2, arrange the 6 strands onto the flat surface in the following order: 1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C, 4 = C, 5 = B, 6 = A.

The Scarf is made with both left and right hand basic double knots. Follow Diagrams #3 and #4 for how to make a left hand basic knot, and Diagrams #5 and #6 for how to make a right hand basic knot.

Beginning on the left side with strand 1, and following Diagram #7, loosely tie the first left hand double knot by knotting strand 1 over and under strand 2. Pull strand 1 to the left to gently tighten. Repeat to make a double knot.
When knot is completed, move strand 1 over strand 2 and move strand 2 to the left.

For second knot, follow Diagram #8, knotting strand 1 over and under strand 3. Pull strand 1 to the left to gently tighten and repeat to make a double knot. When second knot is completed, move strand 2 over strand 3 and move strand 3 to the left next to strand 2.

The next 3 knots are right hand basic double knots. Beginning on the right side, and following Diagram #9, knot strand 6 over and under strand 5. Pull strand 6 to the right to gently tighten and repeat to make a double knot. When third knot is completed, move strand 6 over strand 5 and move strand 5 to the right.

For fourth knot, knot strand 6 over and under strand 4. Pull strand 6 to the right to tighten and repeat to make a double knot. When fourth knot is completed, move strand 6 over strand 4 and move strand 4 to the right next to strand 5. Diagram #10 shows the position of all strands.

To complete the first row of knots, use a right hand basic knot to tie strand 6 over and under strand 1. Pull strand 6 to the right to gently tighten and repeat to make a double knot. When the last knot is completed, move strand 6 over strand 1, moving strand 1 to the right, next to strand 5. Diagram #11 shows how the first row will look when you're finished. To begin the next row of knots, strands should now be in these positions: 1 = B, 2 = C, 3 = A, 4 = A, 5 = C, 6 = B.

Continue to repeat the same row until almost all yarn has been used. Knot ends.

FINISHING
Cut open the loop of the top overhand knot to make fringe. Trim the fringe on both ends evenly.
