GAUGE:

10 sts + 14 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

2/2 LC (2 over 2 left cross) Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k2, then k2 from cable needle. 2/2 RC (2 over 2 right cross) Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k2, then k2 from cable needle.

NOTES:

1. Center section of Scarf/Vest is worked lengthwise. Stitches are picked up across each short edge of center section and side sections worked.
2. Side sections are divided for arm slits and both sides are worked at the same time with separate balls of yarn until slits are complete. Side sections then continue all the way across to close slit and complete section.
3. Pattern sts can be worked by reading written instructions or following charts. Read Chart from right to left on RS rows and from left to right on WS rows.
4. When you see 'as established' in the instructions, this means to continue in the current pattern st.

Cast on 80 sts.
Purl 1 row.
Row 1 (RS): P1,*k8, p2, k2, p2; rep from * 4 more times; k8, p1.
Row 2: K1, *p8, k2, p2, k2; rep from * 4 more times, p8, k1.
Row 3: P1, *2/2 RC, 2/2 LC, k2, p2, k2; rep from * 4 more times, 2/2 RC, 2/2 LC, p1.
Row 4: K1, *p10, k2, p2; rep from * 4 more times, p8, k1.
Row 5: Rep Row 1.
Row 6: Rep Row 2.
Row 7: P1, *k10, p2, k2; rep from * 4 more times, k8, p1.
Row 8: Rep Row 4.
Row 9: P1, *2/2 RC, 2/2 LC, p2, k2, p2; rep from * 4 more times, 2/2 RC, 2/2 LC, p1.
Rows 10-12: Rep Rows 6-8.
Rep Rows 1-12 for until piece measures 17 in. (43 cm) from beginning, end with a Row 4 or 10. Note: End with a Row 4 or Row 10 means that the last row you work should be a Row 4 or a Row 10, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a Row 5 or a Row 11.
Bind off.
First Side Section
Pick-Up Row (RS): With RS facing, pick up and k44 sts evenly spaced across one short edge of center section.
Purl 1 row.
Row 1 (RS): Sl first st, k1, p2, *k8, p2, k2, p2; rep from * once more; k8, p2, k2.
Row 2: Sl 1, p1, k2, *p8, k2, p2, k2; rep from * once more, p8, k2, p2.
Row 3: Sl 1, p1, k2, *2/2 RC, 2/2 LC, k2, p2, k2; rep from * once more, 2/2 RC, 2/2 LC, k2, p2.
Row 4: Sl 1, k1, p2, *p10, k2, p2; rep from * once more, p8, p2, k2.
Row 5: Rep Row 1.
Row 6: Rep Row 2.

Shape Arm Slit
Next Row (RS): Work in pattern as established over first 29 sts, join second ball of yarn and work in pattern as established over last 15 sts.
Working both sides at same time with separate balls of yarn, work in pattern as established for 5 in. (12.5cm), end with a WS row.
Next Row (RS): Working in pattern as established, work across all sts with one ball of yarn.
Work in pattern as established until side section measures 15 in. (38 cm) from Pick-Up Row, end with Row 4 or 10.
Bind off.
Rep across other short edge for second side section.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.
