GAUGE:

8 1/2 sc + 10 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm).

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked in joined rnds with the RS facing at all times. Do not turn at the end of a rnd. A crochet chain is woven through the Hat to gather and shape it.
2. To change color when working in the rnd, fasten off old color and join new color as instructed.

HAT
With B, ch 40. Taking care not to twist ch; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in same ch as joining sl st, sc in each ch around; join with sl st in first sc - 40 sc at the end of this rnd.
Rnds 2-4: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off B.
Rnd 5: Join A with sc in same st as joining sl st, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnds 6-11: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 12: Ch 1, *sc in next 8 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc - 36 sc.
Rnds 13-17: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 18: Ch 1, *sc in next 7 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc - 32 sc.
Rnds 19-21: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 22: Ch 1, *sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc - 28 sc.
Rnd 23: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 24: Ch 1, *sc in next 5 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc - 24 sc.
Rnd 25: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 26: Ch 1, *sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc - 20 sc.
Rnd 27: Ch 1, *sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc - 16 sc.
Rnd 28: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc - 12 sc.
Rnd 29: Ch 1, *sc in next sc, sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc - 8 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Flatten top of Hat and sew top seam.

FINISHING
With B, make a chain about 20 in. (51 cm) long. Fasten off.
From RS and beg at lower edge near center front of Hat, use crochet hook to weave chain upwards through fabric of Hat for about 7 in. (18 cm), then weave back down to lower edge. Pull ends of chain to gather Hat, then tie ends of chain into a bow.
Weave yarn ends into fabric of Hat.
