GAUGE:

8 1/2 sts + 13 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto the left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased.

NOTES:

Cowl is worked in rnds, beg at lower edge with circular needle, then changing to double pointed needles when sts have been sufficiently decreased.

COWL
With longer circular needle, cast on 108 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts. Slip marker as you come to it.
Rnds 1-23: *K6, p6; rep from * around.
Rnd 24 (Decrease Rnd): *K6, p4, p2tog; rep from * around - 99 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnds 25-27: *K6, p5; rep from * around.
Rnd 28 (Decrease Rnd): *K4, k2tog, p5; rep from * around - 90 sts.
Rnds 29-33: *K5, p5; rep from * around.
Rnd 34 (Decrease Rnd): *K5, p3, p2tog; rep from * around - 81 sts.
Rnds 35-37: *K5, p4; rep from * around.
Rnd 38 (Decrease Rnd): *K3, k2tog, p4; rep from * around - 72 sts.
Rnds 39-43: *K4, p4; rep from * around.
Rnd 44 (Decrease Rnd): *K4, p2, p2tog; rep from * around - 63 sts.
Rnds 45-47: *K4, p3; rep from * around.
Change to double pointed knitting needles (dpns) while working the next rnd.
Working with one dpn at a time, work 18 sts onto each of 3 dpns.
Continue working in the rnd with the 4th dpn.
Rnd 48 (Decrease Rnd): *K2, k2tog, p3; rep from * around - 54 sts.
Rnds 49-53: *K3, p3; rep from * around.
Rnd 54 (Decrease Rnd): *K1, k2tog, p1, p2tog; rep from * around - 36 sts.
Rnds 55-66: *K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rnd 67 (Increase Rnd): *K1, M1, k1, p1, M1, p1; rep from * around - 54 sts.
Rnds 68-79: *K3, p3; rep from * around.
Bind off loosely in pattern.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.

This pattern works up very quickly and is easy to do. I did have to use size 13 needles instead of 11 to get the correct gauge with my knitting tension. The Silky Twist yarn is so nice to work with (but maybe not for beginners as newbies have a bit of trouble with boucle type yarns) and is soft,nicely textured, feels great and drapes well. I used the Java color.
