12 sc + 12 rows = 4 in. (10 cm).
One Square = 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 in. (9 x 9 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

sc3tog (sc 3 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) 3 times, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook – 2 sts decreased.

1. Scarf is worked in a modular fashion. Sts are picked up across previous Squares to beg each new Square.
2. Each Square is worked with a decrease on every row to form the miter.

First Square

Ch 22.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 8 ch, sc3tog, sc in next 9 ch - 19 sts at the end of this row. Place a marker at beg of this row to indicate beg edge for next Square.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 8 sts, sc3tog, place marker in sc3tog just made, sc in last 8 sts - 17 sts.
Rows 3-9: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to 1 st before marker, remove marker, sc3tog, replace marker in sc3tog just made, sc in each st to end of row - 3 sts at the end of Row 9 Do not replace sc3tog marker when working Row 9.
Row 10:Ch 1, turn, skip first 2 sts, slip st in last st. Do not fasten off.

Second Square
Row 1:
Ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 8 ch; beg in last ch, and working across marked side edge of previous Square, sc3tog, work 9 sc evenly spaced across rem of side edge to corner - 19 sts. Place marker at beg of this row.
Rep Rows 2-10 of First Square. Do not fasten off.

Third-Eighteenth Squares
Always work Row 1 of each Square across marked edge of previous Square to form a strip of Squares.
Rep Second Square until 18 Squares have been worked and almost all yarn has been used. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.
