GAUGE:

18 sc = about 4 in. (10 cm).
EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Work in continuous rnds, with right side facing throughout; do not join or turn.
2. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete the st. Fasten off old color.

BASE
With A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around - 12 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st; rep from * around - 18 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 4: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * around - 24 sts at the end of this rnd.
Note: In next rnd, markers are placed to indicate increase locations. In following rnds, increases (2 sc in same st) are worked in each increase location and the markers are moved up. Use of the markers is optional, if you can "read" your stitches, you may choose not to use the markers.
Rnd 5: 2 sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts, *2 sc in next st, place a marker in first sc of 2-sc just made, sc in next 3 sts; rep from * around - 30 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnds 6-18: 2 sc in next st, *sc in each st to next marker, 2 sc in marked st, move marker to first sc of 2-sc just made; rep from * 5 more times, sc in each st to end of rnd - 108 sts at the end of Rnd 18.
Remove all markers except beg of rnd marker.
Rnd 19: Working through back loops only, sc in each st around.
Rnds 20-29: Sc in each st around. Change to B.
Rnd 30: Working through back loops only, *sc2tog, sc in next 16 sts; rep from * around - 102 sts at end of this rnd. Change to C.
Rnd 31: *Sc2tog, sc in next 15 sts; rep from * around - 96 sts. Change to D.
Rnd 32: *Sc2tog, sc in next 14 sts; rep from * around - 90 sts. Change to E.
Rnd 33: *Sc2tog, sc in next 13 sts; rep from * around - 84 sts. Change to B.
Rnd 34: *Sc2tog, sc in next 12 sts; rep from * around - 78 sts. Change to C.
Rnd 35: *Sc2tog, sc in next 11 sts; rep from * around - 72 sts. Change to D.
Rnd 36: *Sc2tog, sc in next 10 sts; rep from * around - 66 sts. Change to E.
Rnd 37: *Sc2tog, sc in next 9 sts; rep from * around - 60 sts. Change to B.
Beg to stuff piece firmly. Continue to stuff as work progresses.
Rnd 38: *Sc2tog, sc in next 8 sts; rep from * around - 54 sts. Change to C.
Rnd 39: *Sc2tog, sc in next 7 sts; rep from * around - 48 sts. Change to D.
Rnd 40: *Sc2tog, sc in next 6 sts; rep from * around - 42 sts. Change to E.
Rnd 41: *Sc2tog, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * around - 36 sts. Change to B.
Rnd 42: *Sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts; rep from * around - 30 sts. Change to C.
Rnd 43: *Sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts; rep from * around - 24 sts. Change to D.

POST
With B, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around - 10 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st; rep from * around - 15 sts.
Rnd 4: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * around - 20 sts.
Rnd 5: Sc in each st around. Change to C.
Rnds 6 and 7: Sc in each st around. Change to D.
Beg stuffing piece. Continue to stuff as work progresses.
Rnds 8-37: Sc in each st around, changing color as follows: *Work 2 rnds with D, 2 rnds with E, 2 rnds with B, 2 rnds with C; rep from * 2 more times, then work 2 rnds with D, 2 rnds with E, 2 rnds with B.
Fasten off.

BUTTONS (make 2)
With B, ch 2.
Rnd 1:Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Sew last rnd of stuffed Post to center of Base. Sew one Button to center front of Base. Set other Button aside. Weave in ends.

HAT
With F, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around - 6 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st; rep from * around - 9 sts.
Rnd 4: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * around - 12 sts.
Rnd 5: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts; rep from * around - 15 sts.
Rnd 6: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts; rep from * around - 18 sts.
Rnd 7: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * around - 21 sts.
Rnd 8: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts; rep from * around - 24 sts.
Rnd 9: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 7 sts; rep from * around - 27 sts.
Rnd 10: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 8 sts; rep from * around - 30 sts.
Rnd 11: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 9 sts; rep from * around - 33 sts.
Rnd 12: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 10 sts; rep from * around - 36 sts.
Rnds 13-16: Sc in each st around. Change to H.
Rnds 17-19: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 20: *Sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts; rep from * around - 30 sts.
Fasten off.
FINISHING
Holding one strand each of E and H together and following package directions, make a small pom-pom. Sew pom-pom to top of Hat, and roll the last couple of rnds up for brim. Weave in ends.

BOTTOM RING
With G, ch 40; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in same ch as joining, sc in next 3 ch *2 sc in next ch, sc in next 3 ch; rep from * around. Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed - 50 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts; rep from * around - 60 sts.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * around - 70 sts.
Rnd 4: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts; rep from * around - 80 sts.
Rnds 5-18: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 19: *Sc2tog, sc in next 6 sts; rep from * around - 70 sts.
Rnd 20: *Sc2tog, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * around - 60 sts.
Rnd 21: *Sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts; rep from * around - 50 sts.
Rnd 22: *Sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts; rep from * around - 40 sts.
Rnds 23-25: Sc in each st around.
Fasten off.

MITTENS (make 2)
With F, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around - 10 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st; rep from * around - 15 sts.
Rnds 4-6: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 7: Sc in first 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in last 6 sts - 18 sts.
Rnd 8: Sc in first 7 sts, 2 sc in next st, 2 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in last 7 sts - 22 sts.
Rnd 9: Sc in first 9 sts, (sc2tog) twice, sc in last 9 sts - 20 sts.
Rnd 10: Sc in first 8 sts, (sc2tog) twice, sc in last 8 sts - 18 sts.
Rnd 11: Sc in first 7 sts, (sc2tog) twice, sc in last 7 sts - 16 sts.
Rnd 12: Sc in first 6 sts, (sc2tog) twice, sc in last 6 sts - 14 sts.
Rnd 13: Sc in first 5 sts, (sc2tog) twice, sc in last 5 sts - 12 sts.
Rnd 14: Sc in first 4 sts, (sc2tog) twice, sc in last 4 sts - 10 sts.
Fasten off.

FINISHING
Sew first rnd of Bottom Ring to last rnd of Bottom Ring, stuffing firmly before sewing closed. Lightly stuff Mittens, sew one to each side of Bottom Ring. Sew remaining Button to center front of Bottom Ring. Weave in ends.

MIDDLE RING
With D, ch 40, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnds 1-3: Work same as Rnds 1-3 of Bottom Ring - 70 sts at the end of Rnd 3.
Rnds 4-13: Sc in each st around.
Rnds 14-16: Work same as Rnds 20-22 of Bottom Ring - 40 sts at the end of Rnd 16.
Rnds 17-19: Sc in each st around.
Fasten off.

SCARF
With D, ch 37.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 36 sts.
Rows 2-4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
Fasten off.

FINISHING
Sew first rnd of Middle Ring to last rnd of Middle Ring, stuffing firmly before sewing closed.
Fringe
Cut 16 strands of C each about 3 in. (7.5 cm) long. For each fringe, hold 2 strands of yarn together and fold in half. Use crochet hook to draw fold through short edge of Scarf, forming a loop. Pull ends of fringe through this loop. Pull to tighten. Fold Scarf in half. Sew fold to inner circle of Middle Ring.
Weave in ends.

TOP RING
With A, ch 40; ch 40, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnds 1 and 2: Work same as Rnds 1 and 2 of Bottom Ring - 60 sts at the end of Rnd 2.
Rnds 3-10: Sc in each st around.
Following package directions, attach safety ring, spaced about 1 5/8 in./ (3.9 cm).
Rnds 11 and 12: Work same as Rnds 21 and 22 of Bottom Ring - 40 sts at the end of Rnd 12.
Rnds 13-15: Sc in each st around.
Fasten off.

CHEEKS (make 2)
With C, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Sew first rnd of Top Ring to last rnd of Top Ring, stuffing firmly before sewing closed. Sew Cheeks just outside of eyes. With B, embroider straight st smile.
Weave in ends.
