6 1/2 sc = about 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

A large hook is used to create an open fabric that will easily stretch to fit a range of sizes.

Ch 69.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 68 sts at the end of this row.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working in back loops only, sc in each st across.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures about 38 in. (96.5 cm) from beginning.

Fold piece in half to measure 21 x 38 in. (53.5 x 96.5 cm).
Place markers on each of the 21 in. (53.5 cm) sides, 7 in. (18 cm) below fold for armholes. Seam sides from markers down to lower edge.
Weave in ends.

Simple Crochet Shrug Reviewed by Marige OBrien on 2015-08-14 **
While this pattern IS very easy, the instructions make it seem ridiculously confusing and difficult. They never explicitly state that the overall piece, before finishing, should measure 42" x 38." And, while I have managed to finish one of these sweaters, I pulled out the original at least 4 times because I was sure it was wrong. Because of these instructions. Also, the back-loop stitch is used so that it will stretch.

Basically, you make a rectangle that is 42" across by 38" long. Then you fold that rectangle in half so that it is 21 x 38. You sew up 14" of the 21" sides, leaving a 7" gap on each side.

To wear it, you put your arms through the openings from the inside and adjust it until it is centered. The collar is created naturally. The length comes from the fact that the front and back are NOT even.

This is a very clever and easy sweater to make. But the instructions leave much to be desired.
