Collegiate Hat and Scarf

Lion Brand« Wool-Ease« Thick & Quick«

GAUGE:

9 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) over St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Scarf is worked back and forth in rows on straight needles, with a border. Edges of Scarf may roll gently.
2. Hat is worked in the rnd on double pointed needles.

SCARF
With straight needles, cast on 18 sts.
Knit 6 rows for beg border.
Next Row: K2 for border, place marker, p to last 2 sts, place marker, k2 for border.
Next Row: Knit, sl markers as you come to them.
Next Row: K2 for border, sl marker, p to next marker, sl marker, k2 for border.
Rep last 2 rows until piece measures about 58 1/2 in. (148.5 cm) from beg.
Knit 6 rows.
Bind off.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.

HAT
With double pointed needles, cast on 40 sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles, with 10 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 until piece measures about 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd: *K19, k in front and then back of next st (increase made); rep from * once - 42 sts at the end of this rnd.
Continue in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures about 7 in. (18 cm) from beg.
Shape Crown (top of Hat)
Note:
You will be decreasing the number of sts on every other rnd to shape the top of the Hat.
Next Rnd: *K5, k2tog; rep from * around - 36 sts.
Knit 1 rnd.
Next Rnd: *K4, k2tog; rep from * around - 30 sts.
Knit 1 rnd.
Next Rnd: *K3, k2tog; rep from * around - 24 sts.
Knit 1 rnd.
Next Rnd: *K2, k2tog; rep from * around - 18 sts.
Knit 1 rnd.
Next Rnd: *K1, k2tog; rep from * around - 12 sts.
Knit 1 rnd.
Next Rnd: K2tog around - 6 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail.
Thread tail through sts of the last rnd and pull to gather for top of Hat. Knot securely.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.

Collegiate Hat and Scarf Reviewed by Jane Stipe on 2014-09-14 ***
Easy pattern but very disappointed that that the edges roll. Thick yarn and large needles make the scarf too heavy and thick around the neck. Have blocked it and hope the scarf will lay flat.
