New Zig Zag Afghan

Lion Brand® Vanna's Choice®

GAUGE:

12 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Afghan is made from 4 Strips. The Strips are made from wedge shaped sections changing color following the Color Sequence. The wedges are shaped by scs, hdcs and dcs. The Strips are sewn together to make the Afghan.
2. The color is changed on every other row. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete the st. Fasten off old color.

COLOR SEQUENCE
Work *2 rows with A, 2 rows with B, 2 rows with C, 2 rows with D, 2 rows with E, 2 rows with F, 2 rows with G, and 2 rows with H; rep from * for Color Sequence.

AFGHAN
STRIPS (make 4)

With A, ch 43.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 13 ch, hdc in next 14 ch, dc in last 14 ch - 42 sts.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc in this row and in all following rows), turn, dc in next 13 dc, hdc in next 14 hdc, sc in last 14 sc. Change to B.
Row 3: With B, ch 1, turn, sc in first 13 sts, hdc in next 14 sts, dc in last 14 sts.
Row 4: With B, ch 3, turn, dc in next 13 sts, hdc in next 14 sts, sc in last 14 sts. Change to C.
Rows 5-26: Rep Rows 3 and 4 eleven times and continue to change color as in Color Sequence. At the end of Row 26, fasten off.
Row 27: Join F with a sl st at top of first dc on last row, ch 1, sc in next 14 sts, hdc in next 14 sts, dc in last 14 sts.
Row 28: With F, ch 3, turn, dc in first 13 sts, hdc in next 14 sts, sc in last 14 sts. Change to G.
Rows 29-52: Rep Rows 3 and 4 twelve times continuing to change color following Color Sequence. At end of Row 52, fasten off.
Rows 53 and 54: With C, rep Rows 27 and 28.
Rows 55-78: Rep Rows 3 and 4 twelve times continuing to change color following Color Sequence.
Rows 79-182: Rep Rows 27-78 two more times and continuing to change color following Color Sequence.
Notes: There should be a total of 7 wedge shaped sections. The last 2 rows you work will be worked with C. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Lay Strips side by side onto a flat surface, matching curves. Note: Upper and lower edges will be uneven. Sew Strips together.
Pom-poms (make 42, using desired amounts of A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H)
Note:
Make and attach pom-poms in desired colors and in desired arrangement to each of the inner curves across long outer edges.
Following package directions and using desired colors, make 42 pom-poms approx. 1.5 in. (4 cm) in diameter, leaving tails approx. 5 in. (13 cm) long.
Twist or braid one 5 in. (13 cm) strand of yarn of desired contrasting color with tail of pom-pom, creating one twisted cord or braid for each pom-pom. Attach the end of the cord or braid to the outer edge of the Afghan. The finished cord or braid should be approx. 3 in. (7.5 cm) in length. Repeat, evenly spacing groups of 6 pom-poms along each of the inner curves of both long outer edges of the Afghan. This will result in 7 groups of 6 pom-poms; 3 groups on one side and 4 groups on the other side. Weave in all remaining ends.
