Rustic Ripple Afghan

Lion Brand® Hometown USA®

GAUGE:

One ripple = about 6 in. (15 cm) measured from peak to peak + 5 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc3tog (sc 3 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) 3 times, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook – 2 sts decreased.

NOTES:

1. Afghan is made from 4 Panels.
2. Each Panel is worked in a ripple crochet pattern. The ripple pattern is easy to do, but it's important to remember that you may need to work several rows before the ripple pattern becomes clear.
3. The ripple pattern consists of alternating 3-sc peaks and sc3tog valleys. Take care to keep the peaks and valleys of each row aligned. 3 sc are worked into the center sc of each peak and sc3tog are worked centered over each valley of ripples in previous rows.
4. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops to complete the st. Fasten off old color.

PANEL 1 (make 2)
With A, ch 30.
Row 1: Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 5 ch, sc3tog, sc in next 5 ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in next 5 ch, sc3tog, sc in next 5 ch, 2 sc in last ch - 29 sts (2 ripples) at the end of this row.
Rows 2-6: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 5 sts, sc3tog, sc in next 5 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts, sc3tog, sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in last st. Change to B.
Rows 7-12: With B, rep Row 2 six times. Change to C.
Rows 13 and 14: With C, rep Row 2 twice. Change to D.
Rows 15 and 16: With D, rep Row 2 twice. Change to E.
Rows 17 and 18: With E, rep Row 2 twice. Change to A.
Rows 19-24: With A, rep Row 2 six times. Change to B.
Rows 25-42: Rep Rows 7-24.
Fasten off.

PANEL 2 (make 2)
Make same as Panel 1 in the following color sequence: Work 6 rows with B, *2 rows each with C, D, and E, 6 rows with A, 6 rows with B; rep from * once more.
Fasten off.

FINISHING
Alternating Panels 1 and 2, sew long edges of Panels together
Side Edging
Row 1: From RS, join A with sc in lower right hand corner of first Panel 1 and sc evenly across long straight edge. Fasten off. With B, work same edging across opposite side.
Edging
Round 1: From RS, join C with sl st anywhere along outside edge of Afghan, ch 1, work sc evenly spaced around entire outside edge of Afghan, working 3 sc at peak of each ripple and sc3tog over valley of each ripple; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.
