Tunisian Crochet Headbands

Lion Brand® Bonbons®

Exact gauge is not essential to this project.

1. Headband is worked in Tunisian crochet (also known as Afghan stitch).
2. All rows of Tunisian Crochet are worked with the right side facing. Do not turn the work.
3. Each row of Tunisian Crochet is worked in two passes; a Forward Pass and a Return Pass. Loops are picked up and placed on the hook during the Forward Pass. The loops are worked off the hook during the Return Pass. Do not draw up a loop in the first vertical bar during a Forward Pass. The loop remaining on the hook after a Return Pass serves as the first loop of the next row.
4. A regular crochet hook is used, instead of a Tunisian hook, because only a small number of loops are held on the hook at one time.
5. Headbands are worked with 2 strands of yarn held together to create a dense fabric.
6. Wind each color yarn into 2 separate balls before beginning.
7. Change color at the end of a Return Pass by using the new color for the last yarn over.

10 rows dark blue, (2 rows red, 2 rows light blue) 3 times, 2 rows red, 44 rows dark blue.

27 rows purple, 10 rows light blue, 3 rows purple, 14 rows pea green, 14 rows purple.

12 rows pea green, 10 rows sparkling peach, (5 rows pea green, 3 rows emerald) twice, 5 rows pea green, 14 rows hot pink, 11 rows sparkling peach.

With 2 strands of first color of desired Color Sequence held together, and leaving a long yarn tail, ch 5.
Foundation Row (forward pass): Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo and draw up a loop (2 loops on hook), *keeping all loops on hook, insert hook in next ch, yo and draw up a loop; rep from * across - 4 loops on hook.
Foundation Row (return pass): Yo and draw through first loop, *yo and draw through 2 loops; rep from * until 1 loop remains (this loop becomes the first stitch of the next row).
Row 1 (forward pass): Sk first vertical bar of previous row (against edge of piece), *keeping all loops on hook, insert hook from right to left under next vertical bar and draw up a loop; rep from * across.
Row 1 (return pass): Yo and draw through first loop, *yo and draw through 2 loops; rep from * until 1 loop remains (this loop becomes the first st of the next row).
Rep both passes of Row 1 and continue to change color according to Color Sequence until all 68 rows of Color Sequence have been completed.
Last Row:With last color of Color Sequence, sk first vertical bar, sl st in each vertical bar across. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Fold one end of Headband over the hair elastic. With yarn tail, sew the end to the Headband. Being careful not to twist Headband, rep for other end.
Weave in ends.

Tunisian Crochet Headbands Reviewed by Marjorie Monselle on 2014-01-14 *****
I love this pattern rather than use the bonbon yarn I used one small ball of worsted weight yarn. This would be good to use up those scraps.
I am going to make lots of these for Operation Christmas Child boxes.
