Ridged Hat And Scarf

Lion Brand® Homespun®

GAUGE:

10 hdc = 4 in. (10 cm).

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

hdc2tog (hdc 2 sts together) (Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked in the rnd, beg at lower edge.
2. Scarf is worked back and forth in rows.

HAT
Note:
If you find it difficult to join the beg ch into a ring without twisting the ch, Rnd 1 can be worked as a row, then joined into a rnd, as follows: Leaving a long beg tail, ch 51, hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg ch counts as first hdc), hdc in each ch across; join with sl st in first hdc - 50 hdc at the end of this rnd. Use beg tail to sew gap at base of first row closed. Proceed to Rnd 2.
Ch 50; taking care not to twist ch, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 2 (counts as an hdc in this rnd and in all following rnds), hdc in each ch around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 50 hdc at the end of this rnd.
Rnds 2 and 3: Ch 2, hdc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnd 4: Ch 4 (counts as tr in this round and in all following rnds), tr in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnd 5: Ch 4, working in sps between sts, beg in sp between the beg ch-4 and the next tr, tr in each sp around to last sp, sk last sp; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 50 tr.
Rnd 6: Rep Rnd 2.
Rnds 7-11: Rep Rnds 2-6.
Shape Top of Hat
Rnd 12 (Decrease Rnd):
Ch 2, hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog, *hdc in next 3 sts, hdc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 40 sts.
Rnd 13 (Decrease Rnd): Ch 2, hdc in next st, hdc2tog, *hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 30 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

SCARF
Ch 17.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg ch counts as first hdc), hdc in each ch across - 16 sts.
Rows 2 and 3: Ch 2 (counts as hdc in this row and in all following rows), turn, hdc in each st across, working last hdc in top of beg ch.
Row 4: Ch 4 (counts as tr in this row and in all following rows), turn, tr in each st across, working last tr in top of beg ch.
Row 5: Ch 4, turn, working in sps between sts, sk first sp, tr in each sp across, tr in top of beg ch.
Row 6: Rep Row 2.

Ridged Hat And Scarf Reviewed by Rebecca Swadner on 2013-04-24 **
The scarf was okay, but I didn't like the way the hat turned out--absolutely no stretch in the band and it just didn't look right.
