GAUGE:

16 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) over Stockinette st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit)  Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.

1. Stocking is worked in one piece and then seamed.
2. Materials are sufficient to make multiple Ornaments.

Garter Cuff Stocking Ornament Reviewed by Libby on 2014-04-30 *****
This pattern is easy to follow and the results are adorable. With the needle size and yarn weight given here, it's makes a great tree ornament or a decorative gift package tie-on. It's just the right size for a cute way to "wrap" a gift card or small jewelry box. I've made a long I-cord garland and sewed a dozen or so of these along the length of it and strung it along a staircase railing. But my favorite use of this pattern has been lapel pins. I follow the same pattern, but use size 2 needles and doubled strands of size 10 crochet thread. This makes a tiny stocking, about 2.5" high. I sew a 1" pin back onto it and it's so freaking cute I just can't stand it!
